The edge of the earth XII, oil on linen, 63 x 53 cm, 2016.
The Edge of the Earth is an expression of my fascination with the isolated south coast of Tasmania, specifically Bruny Island and the Tasman Peninsula. Travelling solo I visited this landscape on several occasions to study the conflict of rock and water. This trembling place — which to me feels like the edge of the earth — is a landscape in constant turmoil, where for centuries, great precipices have been harassed by violent seas.
I have attempted to translate this violence into my work, a violence which lies deep in the laws of nature and inevitably leaves me feeling extremely humbled and acutely aware of the vulnerability of the human condition. In my gestural brush work I have tried to express the brutality of this place and the feeling of isolation and awe I feel when in it.
